Blog Commenting

Blog Commenting (www.webpresenceseo.wordpress.com)

It is a common thing to have a separate comments section on every blog these days. In fact, even as readers you will get some useful information from the blog comments after you finish reading the article. The practice of commenting on blogs helps in following ways:

  • Getting more information from other experts that is relevant to the blog post / article.
  • Possibility of correcting mistakes / errors using suggestion from other bloggers.
  • New content gets added to the existing web pages through comments and search engines prefer such fresh content.
  • Bloggers can develop a certain rapport with the readers through the comments section by replying to all their queries and suggestions.

Challenges faced by blog comments

Lots of newbies and webmasters who want to promote their website to a wider audience can comment on blogs with their website link even though it is not relevant to the topic discussed in the blog post. In fact, many people just spam other blogs with comments which add no value and to simply build links to their own spammy website. Such practices could have harmful effects on the blog on which spammers post links as search engines will identify that your blog is pointing to some spam websites or malicious websites. This could result in penalties for your blog without any fault of yours.
Many people write comments using wrong spellings and grammar without realizing it. This could impact the correctness of information on your blog and the context in which it is provided. It could severely impact the ranking of your blog in search engines.
Certain useful links can be built from comments on your blog. However, the links built use timestamp or blogger name as anchor text. This could confuse the search engines as this anchor text and inward links are not good keywords representing your blog.

Best practices for blog commenting

  • Commenting of popular blogs and building links can be done in minimum amount. As a blogger, you can perhaps post about 1-2 comments every day on other famous blogs.
  • Comment only on blogs that are relevant to the niche area of your blog. If search engines find that you are commenting a lot on blogs that are not relevant to your niche, they may consider it as a Black Hat SEO technique of the link building and penalize your blog.
  • Only ¼th of the links to your site should originate from blog comments. Remaining links can be established using other genuine sources.
  • While providing links to your blog in other blog comments, make sure you mention the URL as anchor text instead of using keywords as anchor text for most cases.

Precaution for blog comments section

  • Have thorough moderation process in place for all comments posted to your blog.
  • Allow others to post their site links in comment only by making use of “do follow” linking (rel = “dofollow”). A “DoFollow” link can be followed easily by Search Engines and as a result the website that gets pointed by that link gets some much needed SEO brownie points. Alternatively, one can also use NoFollow link (rel = “nofollow”) while giving links to websites. The “NoFollow” attribute informs search engine not to follow the destination link indicated.
  • Check the spelling and grammar of every comment on your blog posts. Make sure you correct them or delete them accordingly.
  • Delete any comments from spammers whose only intention is to get links to their spammy websites.
